Design

The design of autumn dials is directly related to their function as timekeeping and navigation tools. The materials used, the shape of the dial, and the placement of the gnomon are all carefully considered to ensure accuracy and durability.

Materials: Autumn dials are typically made of brass or wood because these materials are durable and weather-resistant. Brass is a particularly good choice because it is also non-magnetic, which means that it will not be affected by the Earth's magnetic field and will therefore provide a more accurate reading.
Shape: The flat, circular plate of an autumn dial is designed to capture the Sun's rays and cast a shadow that indicates the time. The circular shape of the dial also makes it easy to use and transport.
Gnomon: The gnomon is the central pointer on an autumn dial that casts the shadow that indicates the time. The gnomon is typically oriented towards the North Star, and its length and angle are carefully calculated to ensure that it casts an accurate shadow throughout the autumn months.

These design features combine to make autumn dials a simple, accurate, and durable tool for timekeeping and navigation. They are a testament to the ingenuity of our ancestors and continue to be used by some people today.

Use
