Nursing research

Nursing research is a systematic and scientific approach to the study of nursing care and patient outcomes. It involves the use of research methods to investigate questions about the effectiveness of nursing interventions, the quality of care, and the patient experience. Nursing research is essential for improving the quality of nursing care and advancing the profession of nursing.

• Improving the quality of care

Nursing research helps to identify the most effective nursing interventions and improve the quality of care for patients. For example, Dr. Pleva's research on the use of evidence-based practices in nursing homes has shown that these practices can improve patient outcomes, such as reducing the risk of falls and pressure ulcers.

• Advancing the profession of nursing

Nursing research helps to advance the profession of nursing by generating new knowledge and informing nursing practice. For example, Dr. Pleva's research on the role of nurses in patient education has shown that nurses play a vital role in helping patients to understand their health conditions and make informed decisions about their care.

• Informing health policy

Nursing research can inform health policy by providing evidence about the effectiveness of different nursing interventions and the quality of care. For example, Dr. Pleva's research on the impact of nurse staffing levels on patient outcomes has been used to inform policy decisions about nurse staffing ratios.

• Improving patient outcomes

Ultimately, nursing research aims to improve patient outcomes. By identifying the most effective nursing interventions and improving the quality of care, nursing research can help to improve the health and well-being of patients.

Quality of care

Quality of care is a measure of how well health care services are provided to patients. It is influenced by a variety of factors, including the skills and knowledge of health care providers, the availability of resources, and the patient's own health status. Quality of care is important because it can have a significant impact on patient outcomes.

• Patient satisfaction

Patient satisfaction is one of the most important measures of quality of care. Patients who are satisfied with their care are more likely to adhere to their treatment plans and to have better health outcomes. Dr. Pleva's research has shown that nurse staffing levels, nurse education, and the use of evidence-based practices are all associated with higher patient satisfaction.

• Clinical outcomes

Clinical outcomes are another important measure of quality of care. These outcomes include things like the rate of hospital readmissions, the length of hospital stays, and the mortality rate. Dr. Pleva's research has shown that nurse staffing levels, nurse education, and the use of evidence-based practices are all associated with better clinical outcomes.

• Cost of care

The cost of care is another important consideration when it comes to quality of care. It is important to provide high-quality care in a cost-effective manner. Dr. Pleva's research has shown that nurse staffing levels, nurse education, and the use of evidence-based practices can all help to reduce the cost of care.

• Efficiency of care

The efficiency of care is a measure of how well resources are used to provide care. It is important to provide high-quality care in an efficient manner. Evidence-based practice

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a process of making decisions about patient care that is based on the best available evidence. This evidence can come from research studies, clinical trials, and other sources. EBP is important because it helps to ensure that patients receive the most effective and safest care possible.

• Facet 1: Using research to inform practice

One of the most important aspects of EBP is using research to inform practice. This means that clinicians should stay up-to-date on the latest research findings and use this information to make decisions about patient care. For example, if a new study shows that a new medication is more effective than an older medication, clinicians should consider using the new medication for their patients.

• Facet 2: Considering patient preferences

Another important aspect of EBP is considering patient preferences. This means that clinicians should involve patients in decision-making about their care. For example, if a patient has two different treatment options, the clinician should discuss the pros and cons of each option with the patient and help them make a decision that is best for them.

• Facet 3: Using clinical expertise

In addition to using research and considering patient preferences, clinicians should also use their own clinical expertise when making decisions about patient care. This means that clinicians should use their knowledge and experience to interpret research findings and make decisions that are best for their patients.

• Facet 4: Evaluating outcomes

The final step in EBP is evaluating outcomes. This means that clinicians should track the outcomes of their patients' care and use this information to improve their practice. For example, if a clinician tries a new treatment for a patient, they should track the patient's progress and see if the new treatment is effective.

EBP is an essential part of providing high-quality patient care. By using the best available evidence, considering patient preferences, and using their own clinical expertise, clinicians can make decisions that are best for their patients.
