The determination of the cause of death in Fletcher's case was based on a combination of factors, including the autopsy findings, the scene investigation, and the witness statements. The autopsy results played a critical role in establishing that Fletcher's death was a homicide, which ultimately led to the arrest and conviction of her boyfriend for her murder.

Suspect identification: The time of death can be instrumental in identifying potential suspects. By examining the victim's activities and whereabouts during the estimated time of death, investigators can narrow down the pool of individuals who had the opportunity to commit the crime.
Cause and manner of death: The time of death can also shed light on the cause and manner of death. For instance, if the estimated time of death coincides with a period when the victim was known to be alone, it may strengthen the hypothesis of suicide or accidental death.
Witness corroboration: The estimated time of death can be corroborated by witness statements. If witnesses report seeing or hearing something relevant to the case around the estimated time of death, it can strengthen the credibility of the autopsy findings.

In addition to providing a link between Fletcher's boyfriend and the shooting, the presence of GSR on his hands can also help investigators determine the sequence of events.
