Institutional analysis is a key component of Loretta Ostrum's work on environmental governance. She has developed a framework for analyzing the institutional arrangements that support successful collective action, which has been widely used by researchers and policymakers around the world.

• Facet 1: The importance of institutions
Institutions are the rules and norms that govern human behavior. They can be formal, such as laws and regulations, or informal, such as customs and traditions. Institutions play a critical role in shaping the way that people interact with each other and with the environment.
• Facet 2: The design of institutions
The design of institutions is critical to their effectiveness. Institutions that are well-designed will be more likely to promote cooperation and sustainable behavior. Ostrum's framework for institutional analysis provides a set of principles that can be used to design effective institutions.
• Facet 3: The implementation of institutions
The implementation of institutions is also critical to their effectiveness. Institutions that are well-implemented will be more likely to be followed and enforced. Ostrum's work has identified a number of factors that can affect the implementation of institutions, including the level of trust between the parties involved and the availability of resources.
• Facet 4: The evaluation of institutions
It is important to evaluate institutions to ensure that they are achieving their intended goals. Ostrum's framework for institutional analysis provides a set of criteria that can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of institutions.

Common-pool resources

Common-pool resources are resources that are shared by a group of people and are not easily divided into individual units. Examples of common-pool resources include forests, fisheries, and water systems. The management of common-pool resources is a complex challenge, as each individual user has an incentive to overuse the resource, which can lead to the depletion of the resource.

• Facet 1: The tragedy of the commons
The tragedy of the commons is a situation in which a common-pool resource is depleted because each individual user has an incentive to overuse the resource. This can lead to the collapse of the resource, which can have devastating consequences for the people who rely on it.
• Facet 2: Institutional design for common-pool resources
The design of institutions is critical to the sustainable management of common-pool resources. Institutions can be formal, such as laws and regulations, or informal, such as customs and traditions. Ostrum's research has shown that institutions that are well-designed can help to prevent the tragedy of the commons.
• Facet 3: The role of community in common-pool resource management
Community plays a critical role in the sustainable management of common-pool resources. Ostrum's research has shown that communities that are involved in the management of their common-pool resources are more likely to be successful in sustaining those resources.
• Facet 4: The importance of monitoring and enforcement
Monitoring and enforcement are essential for the sustainable management of common-pool resources. Monitoring allows resource users to track the status of the resource and to identify any problems that may be emerging. Enforcement ensures that resource users comply with the rules that have been established for the management of the resource.

Ostrum has used experimental economics to study the behavior of individuals in common-pool resource dilemmas, which are situations in which individuals have an incentive to overuse a shared resource, leading to its depletion.

Ostrum's experimental economics research has shown that individuals are more likely to cooperate and conserve a common-pool resource when they are given clear rules and when they are able to communicate and interact with each other. This research has helped to identify the key factors that contribute to successful common-pool resource management, and it has also provided insights into the design of institutions that can promote cooperation and sustainability.
